Dr Ronan Mac Loughlin PhD MBS is currently Associate Director R&D, Science and Emerging Technologies in Aerogen. He has more than 20 years of expansive experience in designing and developing aerosol delivery systems and drug/device combinations for application primarily in the acute and critical care setting. He currently has more than 90 research articles, 180 conference presentations and conference papers, combined with several patents granted and pending. His patent coverage encompasses drugs, devices, drug/device and device/device combinations as well as patient interventions and interfaces. His most recent focus has been on enabling several clinical programs making use of aerosolised prophylactics and therapeutics for COVID-19, and his work on delivery of inhaled vaccines has resulted in the world’s first approval for an orally inhaled vaccine for COVID-19 (Convidecia Air). His contribution to the state of the art in fugitive medical and patient-derived aerosols was central to the evolution of several critical care consensus statements around the safe use of aerosol therapy during the COVID-19 pandemic. An active networker and collaborator, Ronan has secured more than €50million in program funding from Irish, UK and EU agencies. These grants are focused on the clinical translation of nascent therapies including, but not limited to extracellular vesicles, vaccines, sensors, aerosol generators. He holds the position of Adjunct Associate Professor in Trinity College Dublin’s Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology, Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI), Chairman of the Medical Engineering Technology (MET) Gateway, Chairman of the Industry Advisory Group for CURAM, the medical device research centre. Additionally, he is currently co-chair of the Paediatric and CF working group within the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine (ISAM).
