NRN Summer Event Delegates, Sept 2024

The aim of the New Researcher Network (NRN) as a part of DDL is to develop a broad community of early career scientists to help facilitate discussions surrounding research ideas/challenges, exchanges, joint projects and personal and professional development.
New and early career researchers from both academia and industry, as well as PhD students, with a research interest in the field of lung and nose drug delivery are encouraged to join us.

Julia Berends
University of Groningen
Julia Berends is a PhD student at the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences (2016), a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy (2018), and a master’s degree in Pharmacy (2021) from the University of Groningen. In November 2021 she started her PhD research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Erik Frijlink, Dr. Floris Grasmeijer, and Paul Hagedoorn. Her research focuses on high-dose, carrier-free, dry powder formulations for inhalation, particularly on particle properties affecting the performance of dry powder formulations. Besides research, she gets energy from talking to people about their research and careers. She wants to encourage other young researchers to do so as well. That is the reason why in 2023 she joined the New Researcher Network committee.
Lucy Goodacre
King’s College London and Nanopharm Ltd, an Aptar Pharma Company
Lucy Goodacre – PhD Researcher in Pharmaceutical Science at King’s College London and Nanopharm Ltd, an Aptar Pharma Company.
Lucy previously studied for an MPharm at UCL School of Pharmacy, University College London (2018-2022). She was notably awarded a visiting scholarship to the University of North Carolina (UNC) Eshelman School of Pharmacy, to complete her Master’s project in pharmacokinetic modelling of caffeine in neonatal hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (September – December 2021).
Under the primary supervision of Professor Ben Forbes, Lucy’s PhD project focusses on advanced experimental and computational methods to optimise nasal drug delivery. More specifically, Lucy aims to develop a biologically-relevant suite of nasal mucus simulants, to be used to study mucus-drug particle interaction in the nasal cavity and guide the design of drug formulations for effective intranasal administration.
Lucy is also on the committee board for the New Researcher Network (NRN) at DDL, where she encourages like-minded PhD students and early career scientists to engage in discussion and improve their connections within the field of inhalation/respiratory science.
Scott Tavernini
University of Alberta
Scott Tavernini is a Research Engineer and PhD student at the University of Alberta (Canada) working and studying under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Martin. Scott completed his MSc in 2018 under the supervision of Dr. Warren Finlay with a focus in quantifying nasal deposition in neonates. Afterwards, he continued work at the Aerosol Research Laboratory of Alberta in a research and development capacity. In this role, he was instrumental in the development of a filter which mimics tracheobronchial airway deposition and led the integration of this filter into an in vitro apparatus enabling rapid estimation of regional lung deposition. He began doctoral studies in January of 2023 where he is focusing on measuring dissolution kinetics of solubility-limited drugs subjected to physiologically relevant conditions, with an ultimate goal of unifying in-vitro measurements of regional deposition and dissolution with in-silico modeling of pharmacokinetics.
Origins of the New Researcher Network
The New Researcher Network (NRN) was launched at the 30th DDL Conference in Edinburgh in 2019. The founding members organised NRN activities for four consecutive DDL Conferences, inviting expert speakers to deliver engaging talks to the early career scientists and enabling attendees to form new connections in the inhalation community.
They navigated two virtual conferences during COVID and founded the LinkedIn page, creating an easy way for new scientists and students to collaborate and share ideas.
Our thanks are extended to the founding members of the NRN committee:
(Left to right) Snezana Radivojev, Marie Solcher and Magda Swedrowska.
