Xiomara “Maria” Owen

Xiomara “Maria” Owen

Virginia Commonwealth University

Xiomara "Maria" Owen is a 3rd-year Ph.D. student in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where she focuses on advanced aerosol science. Originally from Honduras, Maria is actively engaged in cutting-edge research to optimize respiratory drug administration.
Her primary research investigates the critical impact of alternative carrier gases on aerosol delivery, with a specific focus on mouth-throat deposition. Utilizing in vitro child oral models, she aims to develop predictive correlations crucial for enhancing the efficacy and safety of inhaled therapies, particularly for pediatric patients. Maria's technical expertise spans across Matlab, Machine Learning (ML), Python, Spratech, Mimics, and CAD, tools she applies rigorously in her work.
Beyond her research, Maria has demonstrated a strong commitment to academic excellence and mentorship, notably recognized as an Outstanding Teaching Assistant at VCU. This achievement underscores her ability to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts and contribute to the educational community.
