Sjoerd Hak

Sjoerd Hak

Department of Biotechnology and Nanomedicine, SINTEF

Sjoerd Hak is a Senior Research Scientist at SINTEF in Trondheim, Norway, where he works in the Department of Biotechnology and Nanomedicine. His research is driven by a fascination for the complex interactions between man-made nanoparticles and biology. Since joining SINTEF in 2019, he has contributed to the development and characterization of polymeric and lipid nanoparticles, leveraging the institute’s cutting-edge infrastructure and broad expertise in nanomedicine synthesis, production, and physicochemical, in vitro, and in vivo characterization.
Sjoerd earned his PhD in Medical Technology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in 2013, following an MSc (with great appreciation) in Biomedical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands in 2007. His academic journey continued at NTNU, where he held research positions in the Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging and the Department of Physics, maintaining a 20% affiliation since 2019. Committed to education, Sjoerd lectures in NTNU’s ‘Nanomedicine II – Therapy’ course and regularly supervises MSc and PhD students. His work continues to bridge the gap between advanced nanotechnology and biomedical applications, contributing to both academic and industrial innovation.
From 2020 to 2022, he served as Research Manager at SINTEF, leading a team of 25 researchers. His scholarly output includes 35 peer-reviewed publications and a book chapter, with over 2,000 citations and an h-index of 21 as of May 2025. He is also the inventor on a pending patent and has authored multiple technical reports for industrial clients.
