Paper: Enhanced Lung Delivery of mRNA Using Nebulized Lipid Nanoparticles
Ricardo Velez is an Associate Scientist in the Inhalation and Advanced Delivery (IADD) group at
Hovione. He studied Chemical Engineering at Nova University of Lisbon from 2017 to 2022,
where he completed his master's degree. During this time he had the opportunity to do
research work on the LAQV REQUIMTE group centered on the development of mefenamic-acid
affinity polymer designed for wastewater purification, and the result of this work was
presented on the 24th meeting of the International Society for Molecular Recognition. His first
professional experience in the pharmaceutical industry was an internship at INFARMED. Here,
he conducted physical and chemical assessments of medicines and medical devices and
accompanied the medicines approval process. Additionally, he had the opportunity to do a 6
month Erasmus program at Otto Von Guericke University of Magdeburg. His Master's thesis
“Development of a nebulization platform for the pulmonary delivery of RNA lipid
Nanoparticles” was a result of a partnership between the University and Hovione, leading to
the opportunity to stay in the company where nowadays he works on process development of
different technologies namely microfluidics, spray drying, and jet milling.
