Manasi Nandi is a Reader in Integrative Pharmacology at King’s College London. She commenced her academic career specialising in in vivo pharmacology, investigating cardiovascular disorders using animal models, but has transitioned into a data sciences. She is the coinventor of a mathematical method (Symmetric Projection Attractor Reconstruction -SPAR) used to extract more information from physiological time series data such as arterial blood pressure, ECG and respiratory flow waveforms. The method works by creating an at-a-glance image that reflects the morphology and variability of the waveform. By adding new metrics to routine measures, it is hoped this method can more sensitively detect drug or disease effects. Her group is currently undertaking validation studies applying the method to preclinical and clinical datasets in order to develop decision support tools to add to preclinical safety and efficacy studies or identify earlier alerts for clinical deterioration. In this presentation, she will describe the current limitations of routine analysis of physiological waveforms and will describe the new method that is being developed using illustrative case studies to highlight SPAR’s potential.
