Summary

Inhalation delivery of biological entities has become of great interest, especially since their development was greatly accelerated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, aerosolisation presents a significant challenge due to the fragility of the constituent molecules. In this study, we present an optimisation of our ultrasonic nebuliser platform to aerosolise biological formulations by considering the balance between the liquid delivery and nebulisation rates. We have shown that by controlling the liquid exposure time to ultrasonic energy, large and shear sensitive Plasmid DNA can be aerosolised without any breakdown in the structure. This opens new opportunities for development of new biological formulation for inhalation drug delivery.
